  We will be holding our first ever whisky dinner on Thursday December 6, this is a dinner event you will not want to miss!  

  Join us for an evening of Kumo fare and premium Japanese whisky.

Kumo Izakaya and Chez Regine present The Japanese Whisky Dinner.

Hosted by Julian White, whisky aficionado and owner of Melbourne's premier whisky bar, Chez Regine, this is a degustation dinner you will not want to miss.

Featuring a hand selected choice of premium and hard to find Japanese whisky matched with Kumo's award winning Japanese Izakaya fare it's shaping up to be the Japanese cuisine lovers dinner of dinners.

Julian will be on hand to give diners an overview of the Japanese whisky landscape, tasting notes and a general whisky 101 for the novice.

For some time it was believed by many that whisky made in the Scottish style, but not produced in Scotland, could not possibly measure up to the standards of the traditional Scotch Whisky distilleries. However, in recent years, a number of blind tastings have been organized by Whisky Magazine, which has included Japanese single malts in the line-up, along with malts from distilleries considered to be among the best in Scotland. On more than one occasion, the results have had Japanese single malts scoring higher than their Scottish counterparts.

In short Japanese whisky is widely regarded as some of the best in the world!

However, most of it is hard to source outside of Japan, but we have delved deep and sourced a great line-up from boutique distilleries such as Eigashima and Monde Shuzo as well as luminaries such as Nikka and Suntory.

Julian and his partner Brooke opened Chez Regine in 2010 with a whisky collection of a conservative 5. Since then, the love of whisky has turned into an obsession and Chez Regine has outgrown it's shelves with the collection soaring to over 250 different whisky's. Chez Regine is now home to the Single Malt Collective, a club for whisky enthusiasts and Julian runs whisky classes twice a week, educating over 1,000 people in the appreciation of whisky. Julian hopes to present whisky in a modest way, that allows the newest whisky drinker to feel comfortable.
