Welcome to Kumo Izakaya, Melbourne's foremost location for Japanese sake, food and culture. An eating place, a drinking place, a meeting place, Kumo is more than a restaurant and bar.

We serve "Izakaya" style Japanese food, it's closest comparison is Spanish tapas. Lots of smaller dishes to share, meaning you get to try many different tastes as opposed to locking yourself into the traditional western style dining of "entree, mains and dessert".

At Kumo Izakaya, you will find a varied and extensive range of local and imported wine, spirits, sake, shochu, umeshu and beer. Our in-house wine and sake experts will be on hand to offer recommendations and information. Enjoy a range of small gourmet izakaya-style platters between friends while opening up a bottle of wine or sake to match, or sip a house signature cocktail or fine Japanese whisky at the bar.

Sake Master vs Sommelier

2 April 2012 ~ Events
Andre Bishop & Sally Humble
Sake vs Wine
Melbourne International Food & Wine Festival Event - Sake Master vs Sommelier.

On Monday 19th March, Kumo co-owner and resident Sake Master, Andre Bishop went head to head with Sommelier Sally Humble to discover what reigns supreme - sake or wine?

Guests were treated to a nine course degustation menu divided into three sections accompanied with both wine and sake. Each round the diners voted on whether they felt wine or sake was the better match.

Both Andre and Sally pulled out all the stops to provide diners with their hand picked selection and therefore it was the guests of the event that were the ultimate winners!

However, we are happy to say that on the night sake fended off stiff competition from the wine with voters going with the sake selection for two of the three rounds.

Apart from the friendly rivalry that ensured it was a great opportunity for all involved to taste some amazing food from Kumo Chefs Akimi Iguchi and Eriko Hamabe. It was also a great opportunity to gain a basic wine and sake education too!

Speaking of Sake Education, we have had very positive interest in running more focused Sake Education evenings. To this end, Sake Master Andre will host a series of intimate Sake Discovery dinners on the second Tuesday of every month starting Tuesday May 8th. These dinners will be limited to 9 guests and held in the intimate Kumo Tatami private dinning room. The evening will comprise of a degustation menu, matched sake and Andre's undivided attention for the evening. If you have an urge to experience the finest food and sake that Kumo has to offer and an a personalised in-depth introduction to sake then this is an evening that you will not want to miss. For booking please call Kumo 9388 1505 Cost $130 pp all inclusive.
